Croatia Updates Digital Nomad Visa Rules
Longer Stays, Business Opportunities, and Family Inclusion
In a strategic move to strengthen its appeal to remote workers, Croatia has officially updated its Digital Nomad Visa program, introducing substantial changes that enhance flexibility, length of stay, and family inclusion. These updates, effective as of April 2025, were announced by Croatia’s Ministry of the Interior and aim to solidify the country’s reputation as one of Europe’s premier destinations for digital nomads.

Key Changes to Croatia’s Digital Nomad Visa
Extended Residency Duration:
The initial residence permit for digital nomads has been extended from 12 months to 18 months. Applicants are now eligible for one renewal, allowing a total stay of up to three years. Previously, digital nomads were allowed a 12-month stay with a possible 6-month extension only.

Digital nomads are now permitted to register as freelancers or start local businesses with significantly reduced bureaucratic hurdles. Setting up a business requires only a notification to authorities within five working days, without the need for complex permits or incorporation procedures.

A major update now allows digital nomads to bring immediate family members (spouses and dependent children) under their visa status. Previously, family reunification was restricted or involved complicated additional procedures.

Unlike earlier restrictions that emphasized employment with foreign companies, remote workers can now diversify their income sources and serve multiple international clients, offering greater freedom for freelancers and entrepreneurs.
Why Croatia Is Investing in Digital Nomads
The move aligns with Croatia’s broader economic goals. Facing demographic challenges such as an aging population and skilled labor shortages (as reported by Eurostat, 2024), Croatia is leveraging the global remote work trend to attract highly skilled professionals and entrepreneurs.
The government also highlights the positive economic impact digital nomads bring, particularly in sectors such as real estate, tourism, hospitality, and technology services.
Speaking on the reforms, Minister of the Interior Davor Božinović stated:
“By simplifying the process and extending residence periods, we aim to create an attractive, stable environment for digital nomads and their families, supporting Croatia’s economic resilience and innovation-driven growth.”

Croatia’s Position Among Global Nomad Destinations
With these new measures, Croatia strengthens its place among other countries actively courting digital nomads, such as:
Japan: Introduced a digital nomad visa allowing 6–12 month stays for high-income remote workers.
Spain: Launched the "Startup Act" offering up to five-year residency for remote workers.
Brazil: Extended digital nomad visas to two years, with simplified taxation policies.
Croatia’s combination of a Mediterranean lifestyle, affordable living costs, EU membership, and now longer legal stays makes it a strong competitor in the global remote work arena.
