The 'Nomad League': and the Winner is... Europe (again)
Every month brings a new ranking of “best countries for digital nomads.” They last about ten minutes — but sometimes, they tell us more about what we measure than what really matters.
Another week, another leaderboard.
This time it’s EuroNews, citing data from Global Citizen Solutions, declaring the “World’s Top 10 Countries for Digital Nomads.”
And guess what? Seven out of ten are in Europe.
🇪🇸 Spain
🇳🇱 the Netherlands
🇺🇾 Uruguay (a brave outlier)
🇨🇦 Canada
🇨🇿 Czechia
🇵🇹 Portugal
🇫🇷 France
🇦🇪 UAE
🇩🇪 Germany
🇲🇹 Malta.
Europe, it seems, has mastered the art of selling comfort: stable institutions, fiber optics, safety, and a latte within reach. Spain tops the list for its generous visa (and even more generous weather), the Netherlands ranks second for long-term integration, and Czechia sneaks into the top five as Central Europe’s quiet achiever.
But here’s the thing: these lists always measure conditions, not connections.
They rate broadband speed, not belonging.
Residency options, not relationships.
And in a lifestyle built around mobility, what most nomads eventually crave isn’t faster Wi-Fi — it’s a slower sense of home.
Still, rankings have their charm. They give governments a PR moment, creators a headline, and the rest of us a reason to daydream (or rage-tweet).
So, what do we take from this one?
That Europe, despite its bureaucracy and weather mood swings, remains the default map for digital nomads looking for both quality and continuity.
And maybe — just maybe — that “best place” means less about where you land, and more about where you stay long enough to be missed.
